Uncle Steve Widders

Co-Founder, Armidale Aboriginal Community Garden

Steve Widders is an Anaiwan Elder from the high country of northern New South Wales. His pride in his identity is central to his connection to Land. As an Aboriginal person, a member of the oldest living culture on the planet, Widders’ work in environment and sustainability is grounded in a reciprocal relationship with Land, understanding that the Land is a part of him and he is part of the Land. Widders seeks to embrace and awaken deep ancestral histories of custodianship over lands and waters that have ensured Aboriginal people’s survival for tens of thousands of years in order to cultivate more sustainable futures. Widders is the cofounder of the Armidale Community Garden that is directed by local Aboriginal people, and has worked in community development in the northern tableland region of New South Wales for over forty years.
